A Hákonarætt Study in Wisdom, Responsibility & Renewal
A twenty-study program of Hákonarætt Fellowship Prison Ministry.

A Good Name is a twenty-study Old Norse religious workbook developed by Hákonarætt Fellowship for use in correctional and reentry settings. Drawing upon the Hávamál, Old Norse sagas, and related historical sources, the program invites participants to examine wisdom, responsibility, self-command, justice, reconciliation, reputation, and the work of building a worthy life.
The studies are designed to encourage serious reflection on past choices, present responsibilities, and the kind of name a person creates through the life they choose to build.
Across twenty studies, participants encounter selections from Old Norse wisdom literature and saga tradition alongside explanations, reflection questions, and practical applications. The emphasis is not simply on learning historical material, but on considering how enduring questions of character, judgment, responsibility, relationships, and reputation apply to one's own life.
Participants encounter selected passages from historical Old Norse sources together with accessible explanations of their meaning and context.
Each study encourages participants to consider their own choices, responsibilities, relationships, and future conduct.
Participants who work through the full twenty-study program may receive a Record of Completion documenting their participation. It is not academic credit and does not confer recognition or authorization as a Gothi.
A Good Name was developed specifically with correctional ministry and reentry in mind. It may be used for individual study or within an appropriately facilitated program, subject to the policies and requirements of the participating facility or organization.
Hákonarætt Fellowship welcomes inquiries from correctional chaplains, religious-services staff, approved volunteers, reentry programs, and others interested in using the program.
A Good Name program materials are available without charge upon request for individual, correctional, reentry, and approved ministry use. The past cannot be rewritten, but the life that follows can still be shaped by wisdom, responsibility, and the choices made from this point forward.
